it seems like phil is indeed ON this night.... and he is right up front in the mix, especially for an AUD and he has a particularly hot GROOOOWWWLLLL to his tone.... sounds like he came to play

As a bass player and hugh Phil fan I must say thanks for posting that pic. That look on his face is classic. However, i have no idea what bass that is. I've ssen a million pics of the Dead but maybe I've just never seen a shot from '83. Such a simple looking guitar. Maybe he went for something less complicated than ol' brown. Have a good weekend all. e

i'll check but i think the photo is from 1985 at the greek.... yeah i am a bit clueless on phil's bass progression. i think he had his first five string in the mid 80s.... but i suspect he got the 5 string and maybe still played a 4? too?

the axe in the photo looks like a music man or maybe it is like the first modulus....?

below we have a 6!!! string from 85
